Social Media Piece #1

This is a graph of the changes in carbon dioxide levels in our earth's atmosphere from 1960 up until now.  As you can see these levels have sky rocketed in the last fifty years, this is for a number of reasons.  Some of the main reasons the amount has gone up so drastically is because of fossil fuel emissions from vehicles, machinery, etc as well as the constant, unnecessary chopping down of forests.  Here in Vermont there are many ski resorts scattered through out the green mountains using fossil fuels to power all of their work cars, snow mobiles, snow cats, ski lifts, which is completely ridiculous!  Knowing the situation our world is in and the awful effect the burning of these fossil fuels has on the environment, the use of biodiesel needs to become more prominent in the vermont ski resort community, as well as in the lives of the average human being.

Biodiesel Benefits:
-Obtainable to most everyone with no environmental impact in the process.
-Biodiesel can be made from multiple different common feedstocks, unlike petroleum oil which can only be obtained deep inside the Earth.  Biodiesel can be made from vegetable oils including hemp, mustard, soybean, canola, safflower, corn and many more, used fryer oil, animal fats, even pond algae.
-"Biodiesel runs 75% cleaner than regular fossil fuel diesel."-(http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel.html) in turn you have to clean your engine much less frequently as well as it making the engine last a much longer life than with fossil fuel diesel.
-"The ozone-forming (smog) potential of biodiesel emissions is nearly 50% less than petro-diesel emissions."-(http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel.html). Petro-diesel is the same thing as fossil fuel diesel.
-It is actually sustainable, unlike fossil fuels which we will run out of in the near future, due to the fact that we can make it from renewable resources AKA plants and animals.
-A U.S. Department of Energy study at the University of California at Davis found that using pure biodiesel instead of petro-diesel reduced cancer risks from exhaust emissions by 93.6%.

Ski resorts also need to be more aware of the amount of trees that they are cutting down for new trails and new buildings to cater to resort customers.  This is also contributing to a huge impact on how much carbon dioxide is being released into the atmosphere, the trees are one of the only things preventing all the carbon dioxide from diluting our atmosphere.  Along with this problem comes the fact that these forests are home to many animals and ecosystems, which are slowly being destroyed.

Effects of Deforestation:
-Trees absorb carbon dioxide to use in the process of photosynthesis, with out enough trees to use this carbon dioxide there is way too much being released into the atmosphere.
-"It has been estimate the 18% of all carbon emissions come from deforestation and we are effectively turning our prize weapon against global warming against ourselves instead."-(http://www.effects-of-deforestation.com/america-deforestation.php)
-"Due to the deforestation there has been a great loss of the flora and fauna. Almost half the species of the flora and fauna has been extinct from the earth and some are in the way to extinction."-(http://www.effects-of-deforestation.com/america-deforestation.php)
-The trees also play a part in the reuse of water, with out the trees to recycle our water, much of it is being lost

If these resorts are contributing to these problems, they are helping ruin their business's for good in the long run.  They are contributing to global warming, when carbon dioxide dilutes the atmosphere, it stops sunlight from being able to bounce back into space through the atmosphere.  The sunlight get's trapped down here and is slowly heating the entire Earth's climate up, if this continues there will be no snow to ride on anymore and the beautiful scenery that people go in the summer for will just never be what it was.

The severe melting of the polar ice caps in this photo is the exact product of the effects of all this carbon dioxide going into our atmosphere.  This does not have to do with the ski resorts in Vermont specifically, but it shows that if a place as cold as antarctica has already started to see loss in their enormous masses of ice, this global warming must really be taking to extreme effect already.  People need to realize the urgency of this situation before it is too late and we lose these things we love, like snowboarding and skiing.

These resorts need to take action by doing things like:
-Using this biodiesel product over fossil fuels to power their off road vehicles, lifts, snowmobiles etc.
-Minimizing the cutting down of trees and surveying land before use so to not destroy native animals homes and environments.
-Making eco friendly buildings with air tight rooms so to not over use heating and cooling systems.
-Use geothermal heating and cooling or solar power energy.
-Use low flow snow guns, faucets, showers, etc in order to conserve water resources.
-Have more glades runs to reduce the amount of trees needed to be cut down.
-"Limit access to, or set aside, certain wildlife habitat areas", "Use wildlife-proof dumpsters or trash containers", "Create or restore habitat where appropriate, either on- or off-site"-(www.nsaa.org/nsaa/environment/sustainable_slopes/Charter.pdf)
- buy recycled goods, using recyclable utensils and plates in lodges etc, reusing materials like trail maps instead of guests getting new ones each time, providing proper recycling receptacles all over resort area, making their be no excuse to not recycle bottles etc.
